Tianjin Medical University Chu Hsien-I Memorial Hospital (also known as Metabolic Deseases Hospital), Founded in 1998, is China’s first modern Class A tertiary specialized hospital for preventing and treating metabolic diseases such as diabetes and its complications. In 2019, the hospital was expanded into a tertiary comprehensive hospital committed to delivering high-quality diagnostic and therapeutic care, advanced health management and diseases prevention, innovative scientific research and translation, and rigorous medical education.
The hospital was named after professor Chu Hsien-I, the founding president of Tianjin Medical University. Professor Chu was a world renowned endocrinologist and known as one of the principal founders of modern endocrinology medicine in China. Chu and professor Liu S-H were the first, dating back to the 1940s, to observe and propose the mechanism of renal osteodystrophy in which bone density is reduced and deformation can occur. They proposed a treatment regime for kidney patients, and their dataset of calcium and phosphorus metabolism is still a key reference for international researchers. Chu is also the leader in the prevention and treatment of endemic goiter and cretinism in China. He led to clarify the pathogenesis of endemic goiter and cretinism, and put forward a set of prevention and treatment plans, which made a pioneering contribution to the elimination of these diseases in China.
Chu Hsien-I Memorial Hospital covers an area of 65,000 square meters, while the total construction area of the hospital reaches 120,000 square meters. It has 1,200 regular hospital beds. Among over 900 hospital staff, there are 3 national talents and nearly 100 staff members with senior professional titles. Since its founding, the hospital has been making great progress and making great contributions clinically and scientifically. As the major composing part of the state key dicipline in Tianjin Medical University, i.e., Dicipline of Endocrinology, the division of Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases was selected as a branch of the National “World-Class” Academic Development Program of Tianjin Medical University. In 2021, the hospital was designated as a sub-center of the National Clinical Medical Research Center for Metabolic Diseases.
