Biochemistry and Molecular Biology is one of the key disciplines in Tianjin Medical University. Professors Xinzhi Tang, Yonghong Xie and Gongyuan Yu used to serve as the directors of this department, respectively. The department was founded in 2012 and Prof. Jie Yang is its current director.
The department features a group of highly accomplished faculty members in teaching and basic research. Significant development has been made to this field. Prof. Jie Yang is a leader of Innovation Team Development Program of National Ministry of Education,and a winner of National Outstanding Youth Fund. She is also elected as a member of National Medical Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Council.
There are young researchers with outstanding achievement funded by the “973”Project, the Changjiang Scholarship, the National Outstanding Youth Science Foundation, the National Excellent Youth Science Foundation, the Ministry of Education New Century Talent Award and the Distinguished Professor of Tianjin Academic.There are 53 faculty members in the department, including 14 professors, 7 associate professors, 22 lecturers and 10 laboratory technicians. All of the teachers participated in the international students’ education own Ph.D. degrees and most of them have postdoc training experience in academic abroad. More than 46 scientific research projects including “973”, “863”projects are undergoing, with a total funding of more than 37 million RMB. We published 220 SCI papers and trained 31 Ph.D. students and more than 30 graduate students in recent years.
The Department offers both theory and lab courses in “Biochemistry in Medical Sciences” and “Molecular Biology” for more than one thousand undergraduate and foreign students, and graduate-level courses in “Experiment Technique in Molecular and Biological Science”, “Biological Safety and Protection in the Lab”, “Biochemistry in Clinical Medicine” and “Principles in Molecular Biology”. “Biochemistry in Clinical Medicine”, one of the top courses in the university, has been offered to foreign students and undergraduates. After many years of great effort in course development, its content and pedagogy have been stabilized and is well-accepted by the students. In recent years, faculty members in the department participated in 10 projects in pedagogical research and renovation at different levels, and also edited and co-edited about 10 textbooks. In the meantime, several faculty members also mentoredundergraduates in the College Students Innovation Research Training Program, and were recognized at the national and municipal levels.
