The Department of Ultrastructural Pathology was established in 1966. Her former name was Electron Microscopy of Tianjin Medical College.
The Great Cultural Revolution was spread over the whole China at that time. And all scientific researches were stopped. This situation were continued till 1976. Our scientific study were restarted since then.
The Department of Ultrastructural Pathology was accurately established in 1983. Since then, a great progress has been achiveved. One of our work was lecture. We have had a course named Ultrasturctural Pathology. It is a sub-course of pathology. It deals with the inner cause of diseases and their morphological changes at the Ultrastructural level. We can know more clearly what happened at the point we sampling the specimen. It could help us to understand the molecular alteration in diseases better. And can give guide for correct understand which organelle was the target one in a certain injurie, and therefore helped us to understand the disease well. So, we say ultrastructural pathology had been a bridge to link the basic and clinical medical. If you know some basic knowledge of it, you’ll understand what happened in organelles such as mitochondria, ribosomes, Golgi complex, microfilaments, microtubules, and so on of a disease or injury.
Apart from the course, our another job is the service of observation of transmisson ielectron microscopy. And these researches take more time and more energy to do well. they are of wide ranges such as nano materials, drugs and so on. Apart our university, many other universities, research center and hospitals, such as Nankai University, Tianjin University, General hospiatal of Tinjin Medical University, etc, are our loyal users.
The first director of our department was professor Bai jin-wen, a well famous pathologist. He created the teaching and research section of Ultra Structural Pathology .
Our department now has only three technicians that’s what is puzzled us. Ultrastructural pathology is of great important in study the morphological changes in cell and tissue at the ultrastructural level. Electron microscopy need special knowledge, technology and particular skills. It is not easy to make a qualified ultrathin section of a biological specimen. All these can not been learned and mastered within a short time. It takes years and specially a spirit of dedication. So it is our sincerely hope to introduce more qualified persons to make the department much glorious and stronger.
